How to Run a Successful Business Online: What’s Getting in the Way of Success?

People who know how to run a successful business online weren’t born that way…

There are several reasons why they have chosen the path of success. And yes, I used the word “chosen” because we all can choose to have success in learning how to market online, just as long as we steer clear of the stumbling blocks along the way.

So this means that all you need to do is find that stumbling block that is holding you back in knowing how to run a successful business, and make a decision to get past it.

To help you out, I’ve outline ten top stumbling blocks that hold people back in their business…

1) Non-committed – “I’ll just try it out.”

Anyone who has ever achieved success in business online has jumped in and committed fully. There are plenty of people who say “I’ll try it out for a month and see if it works”… really? Try a business for a month? Anyone who has that little commitment from the get-go should not join this business, as persistence is golden.

The good news is that success in business online is practically guaranteed given enough time and persistence…

People from all walks of life have been known to achieve internet marketing success – even people with no college education, people who are disabled, and people from all races and religions. But they have one thing in common: they stay committed.

2) Fear of failure

The vast majority of people who opt into a website never even read the emails that are sent to them to teach them how to market online. And this is probably due to skepticism.

A little skepticism about jumping into a new opportunity is healthy. However, beware of choosing to be so skeptical that it holds you back from success. Skepticism is the same as fear. And fear is “False Events Appearing Real”. If you are so skeptical that you never try, then your likelihood of becoming successful is a big fat zero!

3) Fear of success

Fear of success? Yes, there is such a thing as this, too. People by and large are afraid of change. They tend to cling to whatever it is they know, which is their “comfort zone”. Oddly enough, even staying with an abusive spouse is considered a “comfort zone” for some… and staying in an abusive job is also a comfort zone, even though it is far from comfortable. If this is you, be aware of it, recognize it, and try to move on.

4) Fear of quitting job due to long-time loyalty

People who hate their jobs have it easy to move fast in this business. However, if you’ve been working at the same job for years, then you might have a sense of loyalty, and you really don’t feel the need to quit, because the loyalty to something that has provided for you for so long.

Just remember that it’s a business that pays your bills, and in this day in age, anything can happen to that job…

I’m not saying jump out of your job and into internet marketing in one sweep – but just work both at the same time until you start to feel as comfortable with the contacts you make online and your new following as you do in your job.

5) Fear of quitting job due to insecurity

This goes back to the fear of change factor. We all want security, but in reality, being a slave to your job until you die is not really security.

Conversely, it keeps you hostage and holds you back from changing into who you were meant to be…

While it’s a good idea do keep you job while you’re first starting out learning how to run a successful business online, my suggestion is to slowly wean yourself away as you become more secure in knowing how to run a successful business and becoming an entrepreneur.

And, this is probably the longest learning curve with learning how to run a successful business online…

6) Unwillingness to think outside of the box

We all start out going to school where we are taught to just pay attention to what we’re doing, and, whatever you do, don’t talk to your neighbor! I made A’s through most of my school days because I was very good and never talking to my classmates.

Unfortunately, in today’s world, this had really held me back. I’ve had to learn all over again that learning how to run a successful business has to do with communication with others with a willingness to help others. School teaches us that the world is competitive. However, once you learn to cooperate with others to where you can help your neighbor, you’ll be surprised how people seem to come out of the woodwork to join your business!

7) Listening to nay-sayers

This is something that holds the average person back in their business. Just like “crabs in a bucket”, your friends, family members and loved-ones are apt to be asking you, “just how long are you going to try this thing out before you quit?” That’s a loaded question that you should not even acknowledge, because anyone who does not succeed in online marketing has not failed – they quit.

The average learning curve to learn how to run a successful business online takes four years. When you compare this to the costs of a four year college degree, the cash outlay is less and the income level you can achieve is far greater!

So just ignore the nay-sayers and consider the source. You wouldn’t want to take advise from someone who has not learned how to run a successful business any more than you would take marriage advise from someone who has been divorced three times, or take child rearing advise from someone who’s kids are in jail.

8) Unwillingness to get to events

Most of us (me included, I have to admit) think that we’ll up our way up to those events once we learn how to market online. If you’re analytical like me and just don’t see the need for that “rah-ray hype”, then here’s a logical reason to get to events:

Suppose you meet up with a team leader who is making over $10,000 monthly and you tell him your story and he’s inspired enough to make a video with you… or even get a picture taken with you. This is what happened to my daughter when she went to Costa Rica for Dave Wood’s event. Her videos captured with Dave what she posted on her blog sent her business sky-rocketing, and she’s now making over $10,000 monthly! This could be the one missing component you need to learn how to run a successful business online.

9) Trying to learn too much too fast

There are a multitude of ways to market online, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Most of us tend to try out everything without giving anything a chance to work. Once you find a strategy that you enjoy doing, the message here is to change your approach, not your strategy. You WILL get better at anything if you continually work at persistently. And persistence pays off in this business.

10) Don’t be scared to be yourself

Most of us start out “faking till we make it”. Contrary to popular believe, this will hold you back with learning how to run a successful business. There are a bazillion people out there who are marketing the same thing as you, and you need to find a way to stand out in the crowd. We all have gifts that make us unique in some way to anyone else on earth, and you’ll be surprised how the law of attraction draw people your way who think like you do, once you begin to reveal the real you through your stories and videos.

The Key Elements of Building a Successful Business

If you are like most new entrepreneurs, you will most certainly make many mistakes in the process of building a successful business. You are human…and you will falter. Be ready to humble yourself, accept that you will fumble and fall, learn from your failures, pick yourself up, brush the dirt off your back, and continue to look in the only direction that will bring you success…Forward.

“Failure is the tuition you pay for success” ~ Walter Brunell

In the last 4 years I have surrounded myself with many successful small business owners. I have taken notes, asked questions, investigated their tactics, picked their brain, silently watched and have done everything humanly possible to follow in their footsteps. In the process I have discovered the key ingredients of creating a business that can, and will survive in any economy…online or offline.

Putting People First

Putting your needs aside and putting people first is the foundation of any successful business. Building concrete relationships with your customers will create trust. Once your customer trusts you, they will refer you to others, buy your products and continue using your services. Without trust and customer loyalty..businesses don’t have a fighting chance.

In the Internet Marketing arena, thanking people may be as simple as retweeting an article, commenting on a comrades blog, or sharing their post on Facebook.

Zig Ziglar said it best when he said:

“You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.”

Market Yourself, Not Your Business

Spamming and slamming everyone you encounter with a sales pitch about your new product or business is not only unattractive…it’s completely ineffective. People can smell the desperation all over you. Cold calling strangers, neighbors or old friends, and pitching your network marketing business opportunity to them in the first few sentences of a conversation, is not only self serving…it’s downright annoying. You may not realize this…not only are you wasting your time, you are also wasting their valuable time too.

The great leaders of the most successful businesses today didn’t get where they are by jamming the phone lines and filling people’s inboxes with useless and self serving sales pitches.

Remember what we all learned from our parents as a small child?

“You only get one chance to make a first impression” ~ Mom and Dad.

Learn the simple principles of Attraction Marketing. Not only will you see positive results in your business, but you will begin to see a difference in yourself as well.

Do Business With A Conscience

Your reputation as a person will become the fuel and driving force behind your business’s success. Be honest and forthright. If you lose the trust of one associate or customer, it can only take a few minutes, a few phone calls, or a few quick conversations…to lose them all.

One of my community’s most prominent and successful business owners has this sign in all of his stores.

“It can take weeks and months to gain a customer…but only seconds to lose them”

Self Education

Self education is inarguably one of the most effective tools in creating a successful business. Becoming a business owner puts you in the driver’s seat. You no longer have anyone leading the way. It’s up to you to seek out all of the quality information you can get your hands on to implement your business plan. Invest in yourself. It will prove to be the best investment you will ever make.

“Formal education will make you a living, self-education will make you a fortune” ~ Jim Rohn

In A Nutshell

The holy grail of running a successful business doesn’t lie in the product you are Marketing or the service you offer. Implementing these key elements and tweaking them as you go along, is what most successful business owners focus on.

From Gas Engineer to Successful Business Owner – My Rocky Journey

Everyone thought I was mad. Even my Grandmother looked up at me from her deathbed and said “Don’t do it!” the day that I announced that I was going to leave my well paid job as a gas service engineer to start my own business.

For years I had dreamed of starting my own business and now I had taken action (and a massive loan from the bank) and opened up a convenience store and post office. I figured that people always need to eat and therefore opening a shop selling food was a guarantee for success.

Did I enjoy overnight success? NO.

The reality was that I ended up working 18 hours a day, seven days a week for 9 months, sacrificing valuable time with my young family in the process, before finally things started to improve. I went on to open another two stores and won many national competitions including an all expenses paid trip to New York sponsored by Sir Richard Branson.

I thought that I had finally cracked it. Life was good, or so I thought. Then a Superstore opened up nearby and my landlord also opened up a convenience store next door to me. Suddenly my sales dropped.

How did I survive?

I looked for new ways to make money in my stores. I added new lines and introduced more promotions and slowly my customers returned to my store and life was good again.

I then decided to embark on a new adventure-namely building my dream home. I bought a field that had planning permission and split it into five plots.I sold four of the plots almost immediately and kept a plot for myself. The revenue that I made from selling the other plots paid for the infrastructure and towards the cost of building my dream home.

As I was fortunate enough to have good staff to run my stores for me whilst I project managed the building of my house, I was able to process my paperwork from my home office. I began to enjoy not having to travel daily back and forth to my businesses and this got me thinking about working from home permanently.

Not being one to drag my feet I sold my retail stores and started my own construction and development company that I ran from home. My business specialised in buying and selling land and project managing building dream homes for others. This became a successful business very quickly and again life was good. However just at that time the recession came and the demand for wanting to buy land and build houses decreased dramatically. This was a big shock and a massive worry for me as I still had outstanding business loans to pay, staff to provide work for as well as a family to feed. I needed to act fast. I desperately needed to find a way to make more money.

I quickly diversified my business to concentrate more on smaller building works like extensions, loft conversions and conservatories. This took a little time as I needed to rebrand the company to focus more on building works. However once I had tried and tested and found the best marketing methods my company went from strength to strength.

That was until three customers in succession took advantage of my good nature and did not pay for the work that I had carried out for them, due to them running out of money. This was a very stressful time as it resulted in lengthy, costly legal proceedings to recover monies due to me which caused massive cash flow problems within my business.

This is a major downfall for many bricks and mortar businesses especially as you have to outlay lots of capital for materials and labour before you receive payment from the customer. Many businesses have then sadly gone into administration when customers have then failed to pay for the goods and services provided.

Fortunately I was able to survive but it made be re evaluate what I wanted from life.

I knew for sure that I definitely wanted to still run a business. It was what I had done successfully for over twenty years, but I began to look into other opportunities. I still wanted to run a business from home, which in effect was what I was already doing with my construction company, but without the responsibility that the bricks and mortar business provided, namely having staff to find work for and customers delaying in paying for their goods.

That’s when I began to look into opportunities for online businesses. As an established successful businessman I quickly realised that this type of business could provide me with the perfect balance that I needed in my life.

I would still be my own boss, I could still work from home but with this type of business there was a huge global audience to market to and better still they would pay for their goods in advance and the only staff I needed to recruit was my wife.

Julie, my wife had never been that active in running my bricks and mortar businesses but she was very excited about embarking on an online business together especially as this meant that she could work from home around the needs of our young children…Something that she could not have done with our bricks and mortar businesses as the working hours were dictated by customer and supplier needs.

Your Mind And Your Enthusiasm Will Enable You To Build a Successful Business – No Doubt!

Do you know the secret of success? Do you know what to do to build a successful business? Do you know why many people out there fail to succeed in their businesses and in their life? One of the reasons is having a poor MIND coupled with lack of ENTHUSIASM. Your mind and your enthusiasm contribute 100% to the success of your business regardless of the level of your education.

The question now is “How do you use your mind to succeed in your business?” One thing you need to know is that everything you see around us had to be first an idea in the mind. Your mind is a storehouse of wisdom, understanding, intelligence and a source of ideas. What you store in your mind is what you get. If you practice success for your business, your mind will provide you with ways to succeed. It will give you ways to market your business to success.

If you think you can do your home business and succeed, then you can. That’s the principle you need to adopt. But if you think you can’t, the chances are that you cannot. We all have the same mind to start a business but the question is “How can we make full use of it to build successful businesses?” The answer is in having a lot of ENTHUSIASM to do our business. This is what separates winners from ordinary people.

ENTHUSIASM is the eagerness about doing or achieving something. It acts as a catalyst and motivator to do things. You MUST BE ENTHUSIASTIC about your business to get the energy and the wisdom to turn it into a successful business. Your mind is a success machine, which ordinary people never learn to use to succeed in their businesses. The day they learn to use it, they are no longer ordinary people and success becomes their trade name.

Whatever you program your mind to do, it will accomplish. Mentally think about your business succeeding, your mind will figure out ways for you to make it successful. Mentally think about your business failing, your mind will get for you a way to fail. This is why you need to be careful with what you set your heart on. It surely becomes yours.

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. One famous criminologist stated that “When men first come into contact with crime, they abhor it (hate it). If they remain in contact with crime, they become accustomed to it, and endure it. If they remain in contact with it long enough, they finally embrace it, and become influenced by it”. This explains how the mind works.

If you want to do a successful business, spend your time working on it every day. Focus your mind to attain your desires through VISUALISATION, which is a practice of seeing your desires in your imagination day and night. Your subconscious mind works on your desires, picks facts and gives you answers through creativity.

As I conclude, I would like to remind you that enthusiasm is a key to building a successful business. Be enthusiastic about whatever task you do. Focus your mind on ideas and actions that will help you to succeed in your home business. You will obviously succeed and be counted among the highly successful people.
